A GUIDE TO GROWING BAMBOO FOR FOOD PRODUCTION

PART 4 – COMMON BAMBOO PESTS AND DISEASES

As in all agriculture, good plantation hygiene needs to be practised. Bamboos are generally pest and disease free, but a few bamboo diseases have been shown to exist in Australia. As we do not yet have many plantations of commercially cropped bamboos, pests and diseases have not caused great problems. A variety of `wilt' is present that may need addressing in the future. Growers should contact their state Department of Agriculture for details.

Leaf-biting and sucking insects including aphids cause minor damage to ornamental bamboos and may be a problem in shoot plantations especially when bamboos are small. Adult plants do not seem overly bothered by such pests. Systemic insecticides and predatory species offer a measure of control. Scale insects can be troublesome to some plants. They usually haunt culms and branches sheltered by adhering culm or leaf sheaths. Light spraying oils [White Oil] and Malascale(r) help control outbreaks of scale.
