THAMNOCALAMUS:

Seven alpine bamboos from Eastern Asia and Africa. Similar to the genus Sinarundinaria.

Description: Umbrella bamboo-looks similar to Fargesia nitida, but has green culms. Grows at elevations above 3000m in China where it is an important food for the Panda.

Description: Open clumping bamboo with short leafy side branches and thick-walled culms. Native to South Africa.

 

THYROSTACHYS:

This is a genus of two known species from Burma and Thailand, growing between 8 and 25 metres tall and similar in many ways to Bambusa.

Description: Very compact clump of culms with short internodes, bare of branches for two thirds of the culms, making it a very decorative species. Strong culms useful as light timber, paper pulp and handcrafts. Edible shoots.
